GIMNAZIJA METKOVIC
Gimnazija Metkovic is a state secondary school with 330 students and 40 teachers. It offers three program orientations - language-oriented, STEM-oriented, and comprehensive. The school has a strong academic focus, consistently achieving high scores in competitions and national exams. Dropout rates are virtually non-existent, reflecting the Croatian educational system's success.
For the past five years, Gimnazija Metkovic has actively participated in international partnerships, notably Erasmus, providing students with practical skills and hands-on experiences beyond theoretical knowledge. These partnerships serve as a window into other cultures, offering students and teachers the opportunity to broaden their horizons.
Located in a border town, the school's main industries include agriculture, tourism, and administration. Some students commute from neighboring towns and even Bosnia and Herzegovina. The project is led by a capable team, comprising the principal, an experienced contact person for Erasmus, and a school accountant with EU funding expertise. The project implementation will be overseen by a balanced mix of young and experienced teachers specializing in geography, biology, chemistry, and history.
Having successfully completed multiple Erasmus projects and with ongoing ones, Gimnazija Metkovic is confident in their ability to successfully execute this project. As a European Parliament Ambassador School, they actively promote European cooperation and prioritize education improvement and environmental preservation. Equipped with advanced technology, such as 3D printers and STEM workspaces, the school has the necessary resources to support the project's objectives. Additionally, they will serve as advisors to Gimnazija Vukovar in establishing similar partnerships. The project itself represents the geographical and historical diversity of Croatia, incorporating the unique characteristics of two distinct areas.
Raw materials
Description of the activity:
One part of the Learning/Teaching/Training Activity in Croatia will take part in the southern Dubrovnik-Neretva region in Metkovic. Each guest school will prepare beforehand a short presentation about major raw materials in their country and their use, to be presented during the mobility. After presentations there will be a debate on "Whether raw materials can be a benefit or a disadvantage".
There will be a hands-on activity for students to create with stones in a workshop at the local archaeological museum. In Gimnazija Metkovic, participants will attend a geography class, learning about the geography of Croatia, followed by a knowledge quiz. Foreign languages and STEM subjects will also invite guest students and teachers into their lessons.
The school's STEM workspace and 3D printers will be presented. Teachers will have meetings to share our work on parallel projects, to learn about the European Parliament Ambassador Programme and how to teach about EU institutions and about UNESCO Sustainable Development Goals. As water is a vital resource in the area, the participants will take a tour of the canals of the Neretva river in a traditional vessel. One day will be in Dubrovnik, as an example of diplomacy and trade - resources used by Dubrovnik Republic to succeed despite the lack of natural resources.
