Zespol Szkol Ogolnoksztalcacych nr 12

The Group of Schools no. 12 is located in Gdańsk, Pomeranian Voivodeship. There are about 700 students and approximately 55 teachers working at school.

Our school provides a comprehensive education to young people and prepares them for life in a multicultural world. Students can choose the subjects they want to learn at the basic or extended level, therefore there are classes with biological, chemical, geographical, historical, European or linguistic faculties, where pupils acquire much more extensive knowledge of chosen subjects.

Our students take part in many different kinds of competitions and subject contests on the regional and national level, the school organizes a lot of afterschool activities, actions, trips and school exchanges which serve to raise the consciousness of students connected with issues of ecology, treasures of the local habitat, the promotion of eco-tourism, sport and healthy lifestyle as well as food. Our school cooperates with some local institutions e.g. the University of Gdańsk (by attending the lectures), the Medical University of Gdańsk, Education Department and the local council. The students willingly participate in numerous sports events, charity auctions, which are aimed at other teenagers, the disabled or people in need.

Our school has participated in international projects like Comenius and Erasmus +, we have also experience in conducting eTwinning projects. In the school, there is a highly-motivated group of English and science teachers, who eagerly participated in the previous projects and can share their knowledge and experience connected with this field. The contact person, Agnieszka Jackiewicz, an English teacher, was a coordinator in the previous projects. We have also many international school exchanges, e.g. with German schools.

We could bring into the project our experience connected with previously realized geographically-oriented projects: „Water-Woda-Wasser” for which the project coordinator Agnieszka Jackiewicz got the eTwinning National Quality Label, as well as Comenius project connected with geography „Natural Treasures of Europe”, which was awarded by EU the status of the „Star project” and was honored by the Polish NA as an “example of Good Practices”.

DEMOCRACY

Description of the activity:

For this mobility, we will make our students search the term of democracy, how, where and when it appeared and which conditions are needed to call a country democratic. As Gdańsk is perceived as the cradle of the “Solidarity” democracy movement, which resulted in the fall of the communism in Europe, during the mobility to Poland we are going to visit the landmarks of European democracy:

1. European Solidarity Centre – the only museum in Poland honoured with THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE MUSEUM PRIZE (2016), which has been awarded annually to museums that have made significant contributions to the understanding of Europe’s cultural heritage. The centre was founded to commemorate, maintain and popularise the heritage and message of the “Solidarity” movement, democracy and the anti-communist democratic opposition in Poland and throughout the world.

2. The Historic Gdańsk Shipyard, Solidarity Square and Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers of 1970 – the places which together with the European Solidarity Centre have been awarded the European Heritage Label to mark the important role those sites have played in European history and culture. During guided tour students and teachers will learn about the idea of uniting, as well as democratic and humanistic values.

3. Stuthoff concentration camp and the Museum of the Second World War - students will get acquainted with atrocities of the war and what can happen when the democracy is replaced by totalitarian systems. Students will make a search and prepare a presentation about the events which were against democracy. After the visit there will be also an Oxford-style debate in which participating students will take part, getting to know the rules of debate conducted in that style.

4. The Castle in Malbork - the largest castle in the world measured and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Students will learn about the political systems in mediaeval Poland and Europe and compare them with the systems in their own countries.

5. Creative drama workshops about democracy – students will create their own performance together, making use of pantomime, symbolism, theatre of movement and symbolism.

6. The workshop in the Amber museum – students will learn how important raw material can be for local people.
